General information

Background: Built in two phases in 1974 and 1991; spacious hall, well-equipped library and extensive grounds; improvements in 2001 included computer suite, additional office, storage space, outdoor play facilities for the youngest pupils; further improvements in 2002 included Beacon office and upgrades to classrooms. Serves a mixed catchment area; over-subscribed, with two applications per place. Prides itself on raising pupils' self-esteem and self-image. Extra-curricular activities range from class trips to Belmont Village, Chester Zoo, Manchester Airport, to Edale Youth Hostel for a weekend residential outdoor pursuit holiday for Year 6 pupils and a residential visit to the Peace Centre in Warrington for Year 5 pupils. A wide range of after-school clubs include chess, choir, high-5, netball, soccer, choral, speaking, drama, panto, cross-country and gymnastics. All teachers are involved in clubs. Many people are brought into school who offer a great deal to the curriculum; PSHME (Personal, Social, Health, Moral Education) coordinator arranges visitors 'to support and promote aspects of the schools cross-curricular policy'. Study support classes are available during term and holidays, and many adult volunteers help the school in many ways. Pupils play a range of sports including football, netball, swimming, athletics, kwik cricket and cross-country. Sports teams play regularly against other schools; enter and achieve well in local tournaments and competitions; 'many' community links and keen to pursue more. Pupils are also encouraged to raise funds for local and national charities; links with partner schools in South Africa. Activemark Gold; Beacon status; Charter mark; Schools Curriculum Award; Basic Skills Quality Mark; Investor in People status; DfES achievement awards (2001, 2002).
