General information

Background: St Andrew's was the result of the amalgamation of three schools in 1886, when they were replaced by a single school building, which also served as a church. The school now occupies a modern building completed in 1975 and stands close to the new St Andrew's Church. It has 'large' playing fields and 'panoramic views' over the local countryside. The school has 'close links' with St Andrew's church and the vicar is the chairman of governors and a regular visitor to the school. The school is used by a number of clubs outside school hours. It has a 'flourishing' choir which contributes towards musical and dramatic productions which are put on at 'regular intervals'. A 'variety' of clubs takes place at lunchtimes and after school. These include a gym club, football club, recorder clubs, guitar club, first aid club, craft and sports clubs which are all 'well attended'. The school is 'well supported' by its governors and parents. There is a 'flourishing' PTA which holds 'regular' fund raising and social events such as Christmas and summer fairs, sponsored swims, non-uniform days and beetle drives. Proceeds of fund-raising have been used to lease computers, resource numeracy and literacy and to buy white boards and a laminator among other things, as well as providing additional treats for pupils. 'Parents are welcome to come into school and many help by working with individuals or groups of children.' The school also raises money to support various charities each year. The teaching curriculum is also 'enriched' by outside visits, visiting speakers and theatre companies.
