General information
Background: Thornleigh is a thriving and active school with a long-established reputation. The school was founded in 1925 by the Salesians of Don Bosco and were direct grant boys Grammar school until 1979. It is now a co-educational Catholic comprehensive school meeting the needs of children of all abilities. As well as gaining excellent academic results the school provides a very wide range of sporting, musical, social and extra-curricular opportunities. The school is a Specialist Sports College, which gives it another vehicle through which to raise the achievements of its pupils and expand the opportunities, and facilities that it offers. The school possesses a full-size sports hall, a well-equipped gymnasium, a hard playing area and three playing fields. Its status as a Sports College has allowed it to build a floodlit astro turf pitch, which is used by pupils and available for local community. The school is continually striving to improve its facilities. In recent years it has provided new buildings and state of the art ICT facilities. Music and drama flourish in school. Each year sees a major school musical production. There is a well-established orchestra and a wide variety of peripatetic tuition takes place. Drama clubs also exist and pupils have won regional awards for their productions. Each year a wide variety of school trips and holidays are offered to pupils. The school aims to provide an environment which is secure, stable and orderly, based on Gospel values of love, peace, justice and personal responsibility.
