General information

Background: First school was built in 1797 at Dimple; transferred to its present location in 1839; both schools built and initially funded through local contributions. Initially a school for children up to 14, became a primary in the 1930s. The name is thought to derive from a family of 16th-century local landowners. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place. Present buildings opened in 1981: two main units, an infant area with five class bases and two resource areas, one for structured play, one for mathematics and English, a junior area with six classrooms, a resource area, and a library. Also a hall, music room, admin section, playing field to the rear, and two playgrounds. Setting is attractive, surrounded by trees and lawns, next to Walmsley Church. Aims to create 'an atmosphere which reflects Christian principles and attitudes, where kindness, tolerance, cheerfulness and respect for each other are not only developed but expected and respected.' Active parent-teacher association, which organises regular functions and raises funds for the school; close links with parents. Music is a strength; choir, orchestra, brass groups, clarinet and string groups. All children learn to play a recorder; choir and orchestra perform regularly. Football, cricket, rugby, swimming, netball and rounders teams. Children also take part in fencing, judo, chess, basketball, athletics, swimming and cross-country. Major fundraising takes place during Lent for various charities. DfES achievement award; Activemark Gold. Ethos: 'The pupils find the teachers kind, helpful, and fair; they feel they are very well looked after. As a result, they are happy and enjoy learning. Parents feel the school is wonderful and a happy place for children to be.' .
