General information

Headteacher: John Brett.

Staff: 25 (men 7, women 18).

Background: Founded in 1895; situated in heart of Scottish Borders, next door to Melrose Rugby Club, birthplace of sevens rugby. Full co-educational school aims to provide broad and accessible curriculum 'offering challenges for the most able at the same time as offering support to those with additional educational needs'. Has strong academic ethos, but culture and sport also regarded as important. Extensive playing fields include all-weather playing surface. Specialist subjects taught include French, Latin, Greek, PE, art, music and drama; strong in performing arts as well as modern and classical languages; many pupils successful in London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art examinations and music examinations. In addition, 75 per cent of Year 5 pupils receive individual instrumental tuition. Productions, concerts, sporting events, including matches against other similar preparatory schools, part of normal timetable. Rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, rounders, gymnastics, athletics, tennis and swimming are offered. Charity fundraiser each term. Day pupils supervised from 7.30am; after-school provision until 6.30pm. Partly selective; procedures include assessment during 'in-day' for pupils.

Approach to discipline: 'A code of conduct encourages pupils to take responsibility for one another. The ethos of the school is very much based on the concept of service to others, positive behaviour, and pupils are encouraged in their strengths and to develop their weaknesses.'

Uniform: Boys: Green/gold school jersey, charcoal-grey long trousers, white shirt, school tie, grey socks, black shoes. Formal: Kilt, sporran, Lovat jersey, tartan/school tie, Lovat kilt socks. Girls: Green/gold school jersey, McKenzie tartan kilt, white blouse, school tie, green knee-length socks/tights, black shoes. 'Uniform is compulsory.'

Special needs: Specific learning difficulties department in well-resourced room, with qualified member of staff, who provides individual support for pupils and advice for classroom teachers.

Secondary schools: Glenalmond College; Merchiston Castle School; Loretto School; Fettes College.

Boys' age range: 2 to 13.

Girls' age range: 2 to 13.
