General information

Background: Founded in 1901, Bournemouth School has always been a grammar for most able boys in area. It moved in 1939 to its present site on the northeast outskirts of Bournemouth, three miles from town centre and adjacent to sister school, Bournemouth School for Girls. A wide range of facilities are offered including modern, hi-tech computer network, an extensive library and recently-built technology block. There are 33 acres of adjoining playing fields provided for rugby, soccer, hockey, tennis, cricket and athletics. A new sports hall with all-weather pitch opened in 1999. The school has an excellent sporting reputation and offers a full range of competitive sports. Dramatic and musical productions; school orchestra, choirs, big band, jazz band, numerous clubs and societies. The school has a long-established exchange progamme, dating back more than 30 years, with partners in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Israel. Specialist language college status. After-school care, until 5pm. Over-subscribed, with three applications per place. Healthy Schools Award (2006). Ethos: 'Emphasis on mutual respect between all members of the school. Pupils are actively encouraged to take personal responsibility for their own behaviour and performance. This is strongly supported by a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including a very active (voluntary) Combined Cadet Force.' .
