General information
Background: Moordown St John's is situated in a residential suburb of Bournemouth. It was founded in 1877 as a girls' school but now caters for all. In addition to its 14 classrooms, the school has a hall, a music and drama studio and an indoor swimming pool which is also used by other schools and clubs. A variety of extra-curricular activities are offered including sports, music, instrumental tuition, and drama and dance. There are also opportunities for children to go on educational visits and residential trips. Links with a local grammar school are being forged to enhance the French tuition which is provided. Links with business, services and the community are promoted through an annual curricular arts project. The notion of giving to others is actively encouraged and recent fundraising appeals have raised considerable funds for the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, the Red Cross and the NSPCC. The school sees its links with parents as very important. The school was awarded an 'Investor in People' award in 1999 and a 'Charter Mark' in 1997. The school is consistently over-subscribed with approxiamtely 45 pert cent more applicants than places.
