General information

Background: Michael Sobell Sinai is a three-form entry Jewish primary under the auspices of the United Synagogue. It opened in 1981 when Solomon Wolfson and Yavneh Primary schools merged. Since then, three extension blocks have been added to the building to include a 'dedicated' teaching block, a block for Years 5 and 6 and a gymnasium. The school's objectives reflect the 'complementary aims of Judaism and education'. The aim of the school is to 'provide its pupils with the essential skills for their future lives in the context of orthodox Jewish beliefs, practises and values and a love of Israel'. The school follows the core subjects of the national curriculum, but also promotes orthodox beliefs and practices. Hebrew and Jewish studies therefore underpin the the whole educational character of the school and a quarter of the timetable is given over to the study of Limmudei Kodesh. The school has an inclusive policy and almost a third of pupils are on the special educational needs (SEN) register. The wide range of extra-curricular activites includes drama, Ohel Torah (breakfast club), Leyning club, chess, ballet, Israeli dancing, musical instrument tuition and various sports. The school also promotes educational trips and each class has at least one major outing annually. These culminate in the Year 6 study tour, a two week residential trip to Israel where pupils study in depth some of the things they have learnt while at the school. As many pupils as possible are encouraged to go. The school has an 'active' parent staff association (PSA), of which all parents and staff are members. This organises many social and fund raising events throughout the year. The school has 'close links' with the Jewish and local communities and 'regularly' raises funds for charity throughout the year.
