General information
Headteacher: Mahendra Savjani, appointed in September 1997.
Staff: 31 (men 8, women 23).
Background: The Swaminarayan Preparatory School is an independent, co-educational school for children aged from three to 11. Its site in Neasden opens the school to a wide catchment area. The school owns three acres of land, adjoining the Gibbons recreational ground, which it uses for some of its sporting activities. The school covers the work of the national curriculum, but added to it are cultural lessons, which give children the scope to acquire the values of Hindu life. .
Approach to discipline: Pupils are taught to respect their teachers and show consideration towards others.
Uniform: Grey trousers/skirt, blazer, black shoes, tie.
Special needs: A part-time teacher is available to support pupils who have special educational needs.
Inspection: September 2002: 'The school provides a sound education for its pupils. It has a number of strengths. These include the distinctive contribution it makes to the teaching of Hindu culture and religion, its success in achieving above-average examination results, good teaching, the positive attitudes of the pupils, committed staff and a shared adherence to Hindu philosophy and beliefs, which pervade and influence the life of the school. Some aspects of the school?s provision do not, however, fully support its aims. Management lacks clear direction and coherence; policies and procedures are not applied consistently; continuity and progression are not well established through the school.'
Boys' age range: 2 to 18.
Girls' age range: 2 to 18.
