General information

Headteacher: Catherine Mary Barnard, appointed in September 1999.

Background: St Clare's Preparatory and Senior School are situated on a 13 acre campus with assembly halls and well-equipped classrooms. The school are located on the fringe of the South Wales Heritage Coastline in the picturesque village of Neuton, near Porthcawl. St Clare's is a non-selective school with an impressive academic record. Sporting facilities, including new all weather courts, swimming pool and extensive playing fields are available. A project to build new classrooms/studio is underway this year. The school aims to provide an education whereby all children achieve their full potential. By developing confidence and self-esteem it believes its students will enter the wider world as informal and active citizens. Extra-curricular activities are encouraged and include the Duke of Edinburgh Award, assisting with Riding for the Disabled Association, community care work as well as many sporting clubs including judo, tennis, and hockey.

Streaming/setting: Year 7+ set in English and mathematics; Year 10 streamed according to options taken.

Approach to discipline: It believes that to function successfully there must exist an atmosphere of good order, understanding and courtesy. A high standard of discipline is expected within a framework of rules and procedures. All sixth form students are required to sign a contract which includes reference to their conduct.

Uniform: Boys: black blazer/trousers, jumper blue (Year 7 to 9) and black jumper (Year 10+).Girls: black blazer/skirt, blue jumper (Year 7 to 9) and black jumper (Year 10+).Tie/scarf/rain jacket for all. Uniform is strictly enforced..

Homework: Average 11-year-old, 5 hours a week; 14-year-old, 10 hours; 16-year-old, 10 hours.
