General information

Headteacher: Richard Cairns, appointed in 2003.

Background: The new headmaster of Brighton College, Richard Cairns, took the helm in January and made his mark by introducing Mandarin Chinese as a compulsory subject for all year 9 pupils. The unprecedented move is in response to the burgeoning growth of China's economy, and typifies the school's approach to providing pupils with broad experience to prepare them for the future. The school has both a writer and a composer in residence and the creative arts are extremely well provided for. A new art school is planned for 2007 and there is a designated area for performances and exhibitions, combined with a cafe. The creative writing of plays, poems and prose is given special attention at weekly meetings held at the headmaster's house. Choral music and dance have particularly strong followings, the latter offered at both GCSE andA-level. Sixth-formers have a wide variety of subject options to choose from, including psychology and photography. The [L]other half[R] of a Brighton College education encompasses many extracurricular activities such as the Combined Cadet Force, Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme and sailing club, as well as musical, dramatic and artistic pursuits. Sports include cricket for boys and girls (old girl Clare Connor is former captain of the England team), fencing, swimming and rugby. Boarding options are extensive at Brighton College: full, weekly, flexible or occasional boarding is offered in dormitories of three or four for younger pupils, one or two for sixth-formers. There is no school on Saturdays.

Alumni: Lord Skidelsky, economist; Peter Mayle, writer; Jonathan Palmer, racing driver; Sir Michael Hordern, actor; Sir Vivien Fuchs, polar explorer.

Higher education: 97% (3 Oxford 3 Cambridge).

Special needs: The school's dyslexia centre provides support to dyslexic children throughout Brighton College. In years 7-11 all English is taught in the centre, as well as additional teaching, in groups no larger than nine. Individual help is available in the sixth form.

Inspection: February 2005: Brighton College successfully fulfils its declared purpose of developing the spiritual, moral, intellectual, cultural, athletic and social potential of its pupils so that they leave as confident, accomplished and responsible young men and women. Very good teaching enables pupils to achieve good academic standards. The strong sense of community and very good pastoral care provide the context in which pupils can develop individual talents and skills but also a sense of responsibility to others. The college provides a very good programme of cultural, social and sporting activities which enrich its pupils' lives and has established excellent links with parents and the outside community.
