Staff: 65 (men 18, women 82).

Background: Brighton and Hove High School aims to be the place where tomorrow's bright stars learn to shine. The school has been educating girls for 130 years. High academic standards are maintained but the school also wants girls to enjoy life and learning, and believes in turning out confident, independent young women. Every girl is expected to be IT-competent and sits a BTEC ICT qualification at the end of year 10. There is also a rich programme of extracurricular activities which include expeditions to developing countries and a Young Enterprise scheme where sixth-formers market their own products with the help of local businesses. Brighton and Hove High, which is owned by the Girls' Day School Trust, has its own field centre in Wales where pupils take part in physical and academic challenges. Pupils also take part in many traditional sports and as they go up the school the choice increases to include cricket, body combat, self-defence and yoga. The school prides itself on the care and support it gives pupils and has won an award for its careers programme, which provides training in life skills such as how to work a room and how to negotiate successfully. It also runs a partnership scheme with like-minded local schools to share best practice and ideas, and to pool resources and expertise. A multi-million-pound refurbishment programme has given the school a new indoor sports hall. Other facilities include a library, fully-equipped laboratories and specialist areas for drama and music.

Alumni: Karen Pickering, Olympic swimmer; Beth Cordingly, television actress.

Higher education: 87% (1 Oxford 4 Cambridge).

Special needs: Tests at entry and in the summer term of the third year assess needs. Parents are contacted if reading or spelling ages are behind and support clinics are offered. The school can cope with a range of needs. All cases are treated on an individual basis and support offered as appropriate.

Inspection: May 2001: It is a very good school with high academic standards and a most caring attitude towards its pupils. Both of these qualities are greatly strengthened by the relaxed but courteous relationships between teachers and pupils and by the notable readiness of girls to help each other whenever it is needed. With the very few exceptions noted, the curriculum is broad and balanced and all pupils have equal access to it. Resources are good, and excellent support is given by non-teaching staff.

Feeder schools: Pupils are drawn from a wide range of local primary and prep schools.; Broadwater Manor; Balfour Junior School; Somerhill School; St Andrew's C of E.

Girls' age range: 3 to 18.

Percentage admitted according to academic ability: 100.

Average class size (seniors; 11-16): 22.

Average class size (sixth form): 12.

Gifted pupils: 2.

Bursary pupils: 79.
