General information

Headteacher: Alan Laurent, appointed in September 2002.

Background: Mowden School was founded by B A Snell at Mowden Hall in Essex in 1896 and moved to its present site in 1913. Edward Snell took over from his father in 1937 and, on his death, his son Christopher became headmaster. From September 2002, ownership passes to Lancing College, when Mowden will become the junior school. Although the house was purpose-built as a prep school, there has been a continuing programme of modernisation and development. Besides a computer room, each classroom also has its own computer. There is a 'well-equipped' science laboratory, technology room, library and music room. 'Spacious' sports fields surround the school which accommodates pitches for all main games and sports. There is an all-weather sports area which includes two tennis courts, a squash court and heated indoor swimming pool. Mowden won the Roald Dahl School of the Year Award and has been commended in recent years in the W. H. Smith's Young Writers Competition and the Wondercrump Poetry Competition. Sporting achievements include winning the Hayland Trophy for cricket twice, the Ardingly under-12 football tournament, the individual and national titles at under-11 and under-13 level in the Preparatory Schools Table Tennis Competition. Pupils are encouraged to raise money for charity and recent beneficiaries of their efforts have included the NSPCC, the Salvation Army, a Romanian orphanage, Great Ormond Street Hospital and the local children's hospital.

Approach to discipline: 'All rules are dictated by common sense and are made for the smooth and efficient running of the school and are expected to be adhered to. Children must behave in a co-operative, courteous and responsible manner and be kindly and helpful to others.'

Uniform: Navy-blue sweatshirt, navy/white striped shirt, grey trousers, blue kagoule. PE kit. 'The school uniform is kept as simple, economical but smart as possible. Regulations are enforced very rigorously.'.

Inspection: March 2003: 'Mowden School provides a sound standard of provision for its pupils. A positive ethos is reflected in the curriculum, the happy environment and the commitment of the governors, headmaster and staff. The school is undergoing a period of significant change. Management has successfully established the new nature of the school through caring and thoughtful leadership.'
