General information

Background: Opened in 1969 to serve the Catholic community in the Rottingdean area, Our Lady of Lourdes RC School now accepts pupils from the nearby areas of Woodingdean, Ovingdean, Saltdean, Telscombe Cliffs and Peacehaven. The school hires two buses to bring the majority of the children to school. Its original building has been modernised and extended to accommodate seven classes, while the hall is used for PE, assemblies, music and school lunches. Facilities include two playgrounds, a playing field and a lending and reference library. All classes from reception onwards follow courses in literacy, numeracy, science, information technology, religion, humanities, art and PE. There is individual and group tuition in recorder, clarinet, cello and violin. The school has the use of a nearby sports field and hires Roedean indoor pool for junior children. There are teams in netball, football, athletics, and cross-country running. A variety of extra-curricular clubs is offered including sports, music, reading, library, choir and residential and day visits. Local people attend school celebrations. There is a collection for the Children's Society during Lent and a food parcel collection for a local homeless centre at Harvest time. Formal parent consultation sessions are arranged three times during the school year to enable parents to discuss their child's progress. There is an active parent-teacher association.
