Background: Since its foundation in 1898, Roedean has stood as an exemplar of high standards in education. Girls are encouraged to be self-reliant, to explore their talents and to strive for excellence. The school's facilities include a modern science wing with laboratories for physics, chemistry and biology, a 320-seat theatre, library, dance studios, music rooms and a separate sixth-form centre.GCSE study is complemented by general courses in ICT, religious studies and sport, with many girls taking extra lessons in dance and drama. Visiting speakers, expeditions and competitions are a regular feature of school life. Several girls in the upper sixth attend undergraduate maths classes at the University of Sussex. Extracurricular activities include the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, debating, ballet, modern and jazz dance and polo. Girls organise many activities themselves, often turning them into an opportunity to raise funds for their chosen charities. Typical weekends for boarders include trips to the beach, theatre or cinema, as well as activities that range from go-karting to horse-riding. The school tries to use its location, flanked by the Sussex Downs and looking to the coast, to the best possible advantage. This year the school's boarding houses were refurbished pupils can expect brighter facilities and, in one house, en-suite bathrooms.
