Background: St Aubyns was founded in 1895. It occupies a delightful 11 acres seaside garden campus in the pretty village of Rottingdean, three miles East of Brighton. The main school building is a listed Georgian town house. Since its foundation, many extension and new buildings have been added, including a large sports hall and squash court, and attractive courtyard of classrooms, science laboratories, art studies, DT workshop and ICT room. Other facilities include a heated outdoor pool, 80 seater drama studio and enchanting chapel. Rottingdean was made famous by Rudyard Kipling in his poem 'A Smuggler's Song'; Kipling's son Jack is a former pupil. Other former pupils include Wilfred Thesigen, Nicholas Soamer, Mathew Fleming and Andrew Lindsey. St Aubyns is a holistic school which provides a very broad curriculum thus ensuring that every child finds success with something. The school's extended day, 08.15 am to 17.30 for all children aged seven plus, allows plenty of time for sports, music, drama and over 20 hobbies. The school is resourced of its vibrant, relaxed, family atmosphere. St Aubyns is essentially a non-selective school which aims to develop each child's potential to the full. The central belief is that all children have talents and these are recognised and encouraged to grow, confidence will grow and this is the key to further success. Considering St Aubyns is essentially a non-selective school, the academic results are excellent. Virtually 100 per cent of 13+ leavers move on to the senior school of their choice. Each year about 25 per cent gain an award. St Aubyns strives for excellence on a broad front. It values and celebrate success in the class, on the games fields in the art room, in the drama studio and in the music room, as well as being well trained academically for their senior schools, St Aubyns boys and girls are prepared for the whole community of senior school. The headmaster of Eastbourne writes: 'self-confidence, the ability to lead and an infectious enthusiasm for learning are the distinctive hallmarks of a St Aubyns pupils.'.

Approach to discipline: Good manners and consideration for others are central to St Aubyns. Children here are open and friendly and have the confidence to talk sensibly with adults. Clear system of standards expected. General belief that good discipline comes from good pastoral care.

Uniform: Everyday: red or navy sweatshirt, shorts upto age of 11, skirt for girls. Best: younger children wear grey v-neck jersey, white shirt and tie. Older people wear blazer, white shirt and tie. 'School uniform is compulsory.'

Special needs: The school has a very well established special needs unit called 'learning plus' run by a full-time expert and two assistants. Several dyslexic children receive help. In-class and one-to-one support available.

Inspection: May 2001: ?St Aubyns is a small, successful day and boarding preparatory and pre-preparatory school. Boys and girls gain a broad education in a friendly, family community, which ensures excellent pastoral care and is based on clear Christian values. The teaching staff form a strong and committed team, with some very good teaching. The non-teaching staff provides an excellent service and contribute a great deal to the welfare of the pupils. The provision for learning support is very good. The excellent activities programme helps to ensure a broad education for all pupils.?.
