General information

Headteacher: Ian McIntyre .

Background: St Christopher's School was founded in 1927 as a boys' preparatory school;in September 1999 it became co-educational. It has expanded to its present position as one of the most successful preparatory schools in Sussex, with a current roll of about 230 day pupils. Children have plenty of opportunity to be involved in sport with PE, rugby, cricket and football supported by a whole range of minor sports such as swimming, sailing, basketball and chess. Music is taught throughout the school and the school has a junior and senior choir, who have been regularly asked to sing at many civic occasions and for cathedral services up and down the country. In recent years several pupils have been awarded music scholarships to their senior schools. At St Christopher's, the Arts play a central role in the development of children. Since the mid 1980s, the school has produced a major theatrical work biannually at the Gardner Arts Centre involving every pupil. Art is fully integrated into the school timetable and all classes are taught in a purpose-built art room. The curriculum involves many aspects of art, such as drawing, painting and 3-D modelling.

Inspection: March 2006: 'The school is highly successful in achieving its aims. It has combined its objectives of enabling pupils to achieve academically for entry to senior schools, and in providing an interesting educational experience within a supportive family environment. Pupils are extremely happy and proud of their school and they greatly value their teachers. Parents are pleased with the education provided. The head and staff have created comprehensive school documentation to introduce a coherent approach to teaching, planning and assessment. A senior management team and middle managers have been appointed to share in implementing the shared vision for the school. These improvements have been possible due to the commitment of the whole school community. As the school is aware, the curriculum is not yet fully balanced and its co-ordination is not fully satisfactory. The current arrangements for pupils needing additional support are not totally adequate and ICT is still in the early stages of development. The last inspection by Ofsted was in 1995. The school has changed significantly. High academic standards have been maintained, but the breadth of pupils? experiences is greatly improved. They now have a wide range of activities and clubs to enrich their education, and much greater emphasis is placed on developing all pupils? confidence and self-esteem. The school meets all the regulatory requirements.'
