General information

Background: The main school building was built in 1898 but since then there have been 'many additions, alterations, improvements and continued maintainance'. The school comprises of 16 class bases plus one small special needs class. This includes three prefabricated classrooms away from the main building. There is also a hall used for a variety of purposes but mainly as a gymnasium and for school assemblies. Recent additions have been a school pond and nature area. The school is proud of its learner swimming pool which is covered and heated, installed as a result of 'parent/teacher efforts'. Two playing areas provide 'adequate recreation space' but 'unfortunately' there is no grassed playing area. The school does have use of facilities for games and sports at Wish Park, ten minutes walk away. West Hove Junior aims to provide a 'broad and balanced' curriculum, to 'find and develop all the talents and interests of each child'. It follows the national curriculum and ICT is taught throughout the school. Games, PE and swimming are part of the curriculum, as are music and art. Clubs on offer vary according to the 'interests and enthusiasm of the staff'. Each year the school organises residential trips or other 'special packages of trips' and eduactional day visits for pupils. There is an 'active' PTA which has assisted in raising funds for extra facilities and equipment for the school, as well as functions for parents, staff and pupils.
