Staff: 8 (men 1, women 7).

Background: Badminton Junior School was founded in 1858 on a spacious 22-acre site, which is shared with the senior school, on the edge of the Downs in northwest Bristol. Pupils have access to the senior school hall, gymnasium, swimming pool, all weather astro pitch, music school, recreational areas and the new science laboratory. Music is important inside and outside the school curriculum. The school is proud of its high level of achievement in swimming and ESB exams. It focuses on 'fun, friendship, freedom and fairness - and teaching that builds firm foundations'. The school day is divided between classroom work, music and the creative arts. French, ICT and music are taught in addition to national curriculum subjects and at least 85 per cent of pupils learn a musical instrument. The prep aims to encourage self-discipline and physical activity; girls take exercise every day. Sports include swimming, netball, rounders, tennis and athletics. There is an extensive extra-curricular programme with superb facilities for music and drama. The school offers flexible day-care and flexible boarding, and pupils may arrive at school from 8.00 and stay until 18.00. Badminton is selective and assessment is based on a day in school. Nurture, inspire, empower.

Approach to discipline: 'A limited number of rules based on common sense and consideration for others.'.

Uniform: Blue/white striped dress, navy blazer in summer. Blue/black checked skirt/tunic, pale-blue blouse, blue cardigan, navy duffel coat, navy tights in winter.

Inspection: April 2003: 'Badminton Junior School is a very successful school in which pupils reach high standards for their ages and abilities. It has a strong family atmosphere in which pupils are cared for exceptionally well. Staff and pupils have a strong sense of community and common purpose. The school provides a particularly broad education that encompasses much more than the purely academic. Pupils develop well as individuals and are very well prepared for the next stage of their education. The school benefits greatly from very good leadership and from being part of Badminton School itself.'
