Background: The school was opened in 1955 as one of the city's first comprehensive schools, and has maintained a reputation for promoting many aspects of success, and for providing a supportive learning environment. The school offers an extensive range of facilities, which are currently benefiting from very significant investment: these include well equipped classrooms, specialist areas in science, English, music, art, drama and technology. Facilities are enhanced by information and communication technology provision and three central computer networks connect areas throughout the school, including its well stocked library. The school has a purpose-built gym in addition to extensive playing fields and hard court areas.
