General information

Background: Situated in north central Bristol, this is the largest primary school in the city. It still stands in its Victorian stone buildings founded in 1896, now comprising three halls, two computer suites, gymnasium, four playgrounds and separate school field. The 'broad and relevant' curriculum is based on teaching all pupils to become 'independent learners'. Those with special educational needs are monitored through an individual education plan. The curriculum is complemented with educational visits, and older children may spend a week at camp, engaging in outdoor pursuits. All children receive swimming lessons at Key Stage 2. The school is 'strong' in the Arts, and maintains links with the Royal Society of Arts, Trinity College of Music and Bristol Old Vic. Ex-pupils include Nobel Prize winner Paul Divac and film star Cary Grant. Lunchtime and after-school activities include drama, rhythm and dance, choir, recorders, soccer, pottery, cycling and chess. The Bishop Road After School Club is a 'lively and extremely popular' opportunity for children to play each weekday under the supervision of playworkers and parents. Support from parents is 'strong' and they are 'very welcome' to assist around the school. The Parent Teacher and Friends Association raises funds to provide school facilities and acts as a 'social forum', with the emphasis on 'having fun, and involving as many people as possible'. There are many links with local churches and children are encouraged to collect for regular donations to various charities. The school is over-subscribed.
