General information

Headteacher: Alison Primrose, appointed in September 2000.

Staff: 12 (men 5, women 7).

Background: Lower school established as separate unit from upper school in 1900; girls first joined in 1980. Lower-school children are expected to sit competitive entry examination to upper school at age of 11; vast majority 'take the test in their stride' and are successful in gaining place. School sets high academic standards and aims to provide 'stable, happy atmosphere in which children can become confident and can develop their individuality'. Lower school organised separately from upper school; has its own staff. Facilities include science laboratory, rooms for music, art and technology as well as hall and computer reference room; facilities available for use at upper school include sports hall and dining hall. Library contains fiction and non-fiction for school's age range; all children have library lesson each week, in addition to which they may use library at lunchtimes. Each class has PE every week and an afternoon of games. Sports include netball, hockey, cricket, rounders, football, rugby, athletics, gymnastics and swimming; local competitions. A Friday afternoon programme provides rich and varied opportunities for all, extending the curriculum to include fencing, karate, climbing, golf and dry slope skiing. Extra-curricular tuition is available for a wide range of musical instruments as well a speech and drama. Clubs include chess, dance, Spanish, ICT and parents are always welcome. A friendly, happy and hard working community, committed to achieve their full potential.

Approach to discipline: 'Positive, encouraging. Children to be enthusiastic, hardworking, polite and considerate.'.

Uniform: Navy blazer and pullover; grey trousers for boys, plaid skirt for girls (trousers permitted); white shirt. Shorts/summer dresses permitted in summer term. Regulations are strictly enforced.

Special needs: Regular screening of all pupils to identify needs. Specialist SEN teaching arranged for to those with special needs. General in-house support through small group work and differentiated teaching. A SEN coordinator manages, records and communicates.

Inspection: October 2003: 'Bristol Grammar School Lower School is an improving school providing a good standard of education and care for its pupils. Pupils, parents and staff contribute effectively to pupils? education. Good leadership has improved many areas of school life but aspects of marking, assessment and reporting need further improvement and the school library does not support pupils? work in all areas of the curriculum.'
