Background: With a history dating back to 1532, Bristol Grammar School offers a blend of old and new. It has the oldest school hall in Britain as well as modern facilities and an up-to-date outlook. Its philosophy of encouraging high academic and sporting achievement has earned it a reputation as one of the leading schools in the southwest. The wide-ranging curriculum includes specialist choices such as classical Greek, psychology, sports science and Russian and students can choose from 26 subjects at AS and A-level. Based in the heart of Bristol, students benefit from 50 acres of sports grounds, a dedicated sixth-form centre and a computerised library stocked with 40,000 books. The music school has six practice rooms, computer rooms for recording and mixing and a theatre that seats 145 people. In 2005 two new buildings opened as part of a continual development programme, providing additional teaching space in departmental areas with classrooms dedicated to modern foreign languages, classics and business studies. Sports such as rugby, cricket, athletics, gymnastics and badminton can be pursued to high standards and one afternoon a week is reserved for extracurricular activities from fencing and ice-skating to Japanese lessons. The school is one of the largest centres in Britain for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme. Bristol Grammar offers expeditions overseas that, in the past, have included trips to Borneo, the Himalayas, Bolivia and Mongolia. The BGS Summit Club also leads expeditions to climb British mountains.

Alumni: Jeremy Northam, actor; Tom Graveney, cricketer; Rabinder Singh, QC; Robert Lacey, author and historian; Lord Franks, diplomat.
