General information

Headteacher: A J Richards, appointed in September 2000.

Staff: 23 (men 5, women 18).

Background: Founded in 1877; close to Clifton Suspension Bridge and Downs; housed in three large listed buildings, surrounded by grass, gardens and tennis courts. Facilities include two information and communications technology suites and a swimming pool. Junior pupils also have access to senior school's science laboratories, drama room, libraries and gym. Links to Bristol University give pupils chance to use sports complex, including four indoor tennis courts and several all-weather pitches. Wide range of sporting activities offered, such as football, hockey, cricket, netball, fencing and taekwondo. More specialist teaching introduced as pupils move through school. French and Latin taught in addition to national curriculum; 45 per cent of pupils take individual music lessons; orchestra, wind band, choir and various ensembles. Public drama productions are staged during the year; school has its own small theatre. Strong community links; pupils take part in half-termly fundraising activities for range of different charities. A caring community in which every individual is appreciated, supported and encouraged to realise their potential.

Approach to discipline: 'The school is firm but fair. Behaviour policies encourage self-discipline and aim to create a 'calm, purposeful and happy atmosphere' within the school. Rewards and sanctions are used to reinforce the behaviour Golden Rules. An anti-bullying policy is in place.'

Uniform: Girls: lilac plaid kilt, plain jumper, white blouse. Boys: white shirt, grey trousers, grey jumper with lilac neckband, tie. 'It is expected that all pupils will wear school uniform'..

Special needs: A special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) works with children on individual basis; range of special needs resources available. SENCO supported by full-time Learning Support Assistant. Diagnostic tests are carried out if learning difficulties are suspected.

Inspection: February 2004: 'Clifton High School provides a very good education for its pupils who often achieve very good and sometimes outstanding results. The nursery is especially successful. The sixth form offers a wide choice of subjects and achievement is high. The school is very well led and managed throughout. The lower school provides strong and successful support for pupils with special educational needs.'
