General information
Headteacher: Colette Culligan, appointed in 1998.
Background: For a 125-year-old school, Clifton High has always been significantly ahead of its time. It had one of the first chemistry laboratories in a girls' school, thereby allowing pupils to enter professions in the fields of medicine and science. Situated close to Brunel's famous suspension bridge in Bristol, the school still aims to give its pupils an education free from subconscious stereotyping and encourages them to excel in whatever area of knowledge they wish to embrace from aeronautical engineering to information technology. The curriculum is designed to give students a broad range of subjects. At GCSE level, they all study six core subjects, which can be combined with each pupil's additional options to enhance their career and personal interests. The spacious original houses, grouped around a central lawn and gardens, house four ICT suites including one newly created in 2003 as a language lab for independent learning. The school also offers the fairly unique option of allowing students in the sixth form the opportunity of boarding during term time with families known to the school. Clifton Hall has a strong focus on sport, not just to promote sporting achievements but also to encourage lifelong fitness in its students. Every year its pupils represent the city and the county in a number of competitions. The school recently won the national schools' tennis championship, two girls represented England in rounders and senior swimmers won places in the national swimming finals, while juniors performed in a Bristol schools' gala.
