General information

Headteacher: Deborah Odysseas-Bailey, appointed in September 1997.

Staff: 28 (men 1, women 27).

Motto: Semper fidelis (Always be true).

Background: Established in 1887, in North Park Eltham by Madam Rossel, the school moved to Eltham Grange in 1958. The school is in a pleasant urban area and was originally the home of the Bilborough family. There are some noted architectural features and small pleasant grounds. Sports offered include netball, tennis, indoor hockey, swimming, football (for preps), athletics, table tennis, volleyball and rounders. In addition, Babington House achieved the curriculum award and has community links through Christchurch and St Christopher's Hospice. Fundraising takes place each year for charities, which include LEPRA, Dr Barnardos, JET and Marie Curie. Babington House School strives for excellence. The school is a happy and secure environment where individual are nurtured, valued and educated for life.

Approach to discipline: 'Expectation of people treating others as they wish to be treated themselves.'

Uniform: Boys: Pale blue shirt, house colour striped tie, pale blue blazer, grey shorts/trousers. Girls: Pale blue shirt, house colour striped tie, navy kilt (seniors), navy skirt (juniors and preps), navy tights. 'Uniform strictly enforced.'

Special needs: 'The school has facilities for SEN provision and staff are available for dyslexia, dyspraxia and general learning support. Classroom assistants are also available for one-to-one teaching.'

Inspection: October 2006: 'The school provides a high quality education that is consistent with its aims and aspirations. Well-structured teaching enables pupils of all abilities to gain confidence and achieve high standards. Most pupils make considerable progress and become confident young adults. The provision for pupils with learning difficulties and who are learning English as an additional language is outstanding. Aesthetic and creative development is exceptional. Pupils show well developed spiritual and cultural development and outstanding moral awareness and social skills. High quality pastoral care is provided and the school fully ensures the health, safety and welfare of the pupils. The school has developed strong links with parents and the community. It benefits from outstanding governance, leadership and management and is aware of where it needs to improve. Insufficient opportunities are provided for pupils to develop independent thinking. Some imbalance exists in the year three to six curriculums. Opportunities for using ICT and mathematics across the curriculum are sometimes missed due to shortcomings in planning. Considerable progress has been made since the previous inspection in 2000. Better administrative support is now provided for the headteacher and no health and safety issues remain. The building programme is well underway and toilet facilities have been improved. Maintenance and cleaning are now of high quality. The library was out of action during inspection thus making it impossible to comment. The nursery provision was inspected by Ofsted six years ago; all of the recommendations have been fully met. The school meets all the regulatory requirements.'

Boys' age range: 3 to 7.

Girls' age range: 3 to 16.

Before-school care: From 08.00.

After-school care: Until 18.00.
