Background: Founded in 1883 in centre of Bromley; moved in 1981 to Bickley, to occupy new buildings in 24 acres of beautiful grounds. Two-form entry junior school housed in its own purpose-built accommodation near to senior school; numerous specialist facilities are shared. Within junior school: well-equipped specialist rooms for music, science, art and technology; well-stocked library and ICT suite. Each classroom is equipped with computers, most with interactive whiteboards; final phase to be completed shortly. Reception classes have new enclosed outdoor learning environment that can be accessed throughout the day. Broad curriculum, as well as extensive extra-curricular programme, with more than 20 before- and after-school clubs and activities, including cricket, ballroom dancing, fencing, touch-typing, speech and drama, and cookery. Twice a year the whole school takes part in a junior school production; European Music Tour bridging Years 6 and 7 involves the choir and wind band and has performed at places such as Rouen Cathedral; annual carol service, with informal concerts throughout the term in various venues as well as Junior School Music Theatre. Highly successful in competitive sport, both locally and nationally: former national champions in gymnastics; Bromley cross-country champions; Kent Relay Swimming Champions. Sports programme offers opportunities for all abilities. Strong in music and drama; large number of girls take part in orchestra, training band, strings group, wind band or choir; extra lessons in all instruments suitable for younger children; speech and drama lessons. More than £12,000 raised for charities in 2005, including local charities. Performances for older people in the community at harvest time and Christmas. Before-school care for children from age of seven, from 8am; after-school care for all children, until 6pm. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place. Ethos: 'The school is a community where each individual is valued and encouraged to reach her full potential. Within a supportive learning environment, girls are expected to work hard and do their very best in all aspects of their education, whether academic, creative, social, physical or spiritual. The atmosphere is releaxed, and a sense of fun and enjoyment overrides all we do.' .

Approach to discipline: Based on respect for oneself and others; staff show respect for the children and model good behaviour; PSHE lessons provide opportunity for discussing friendship, care for others, honesty and tolerance. 'Our approach is a positive and encouraging one, rather than a punitive one - although clear boundaries are set for the children. A code of conduct sets out guidelines for the girls.'

Uniform: Grey and martoon. 'We like all the girls to wear the regulation uniform.'

Special needs: Sepcial educational needs coordinator (SENCO); classroom support for younger children; morning support clubs for children aged seven and over; qualified dyslexia staff.

Inspection: April 2006: 'Bromley High School has many great strengths and no significant weaknesses. Leadership and management are highly successful in achieving the aims of the school and in guarding its distinctive ethos where all members of the community are valued, and know they are valued, for themselves. The attainment of pupils of all ages is good in relation to their ability, and pupils also achieve high standards in the many extra-curricular activities offered to them. Pastoral care and the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils are among the major strengths of the school. Relationships between pupils and between pupils and the staff are very good. Almost all pupils have, for their ages, a mature attitude to learning, are confident and enjoy their work. They treat all members of the school community with respect. The previous inspection took place in 2000, and almost all aspects of the school?s provision received high praise. The school has maintained these high standards. In addition, it has improved the quality of its library facilities, notably in the senior school, but also in the junior school; its registers now comply fully with statutory regulations; use of baseline information for monitoring pupils? progress has been introduced and computerised systems for tracking each pupil?s development are currently being set up. The consistency of marking and assessment across the curriculum has improved. Many effective strategies for increasing the intellectual challenge to pupils in both the junior and senior school have been devised and implemented. The school meets all the regulatory requirements.'
