Background: Bromley High School provides good educational prospects in a caring environment and aims to ensure every girl makes the most of her talents. Founded in 1883, the school is set in 24 acres with modern facilities. The ICT suite has four teaching rooms and a network of computers are distributed throughout the school. A flexible curriculum makes certain that the girls have as much subject choice as possible throughout their school careers. They take nine or 10 GCSEs. This lively community offers a variety of extracurricular activities such as Japanese, hand chiming, chess and debating. Enthusiastic involvement in music, drama, dance and sport is expected. Sports facilities include a six-lane swimming pool, athletics track and sports hall. Extra lessons are available for pupils to learn to play a musical instrument and a large number of pupils participate in the orchestra, strings group, wind band and choir. Some girls also take speech and drama lessons and take part in local festivals and outside competitions. Excursions to theatres and museums are a regular feature of school life. There are annual field trips as well as regular exchanges to France, Germany and Spain. Girls have made World Challenge expeditions to Malaysia, Guyana, Namibia and Vietnam, and music tours to Venice, Malta, Malawi and America. Although the girls enjoy the advantages of a single-sex education, Bromley High participates in many joint activities, both social and academic, with neighbouring boys' schools.

Alumni: Margaret Hodge, minister for industry and the regions; Marilyn Strathern, social anthropologist.

Streaming/setting: Sets are for French (beginning Year 7), German (Year 8), Maths (Year 7) and Science (Year 7).
