General information

Headteacher: Keith John, appointed in January 1995.

Staff: 12 (men 6, women 6).

Background: Set in 25 acres of grounds, committed to creating good staff-pupil relationships based on co-operation, good humour and courtesy. Junior school pupils taught in large listed building on school estate, shares many of senior school's facilities, including Eric Liddell sports centre and Antony Barnard Theatre. Boys learn self-reliance and co-operation through drama, sports, foreign exchanges, adventure holidays and house system. Pupils can learn French, Latin and Spanish in addition to national curriculum through lunchtime clubs. The school provides a wide range of sports: rugby, soccer, hockey, cricket, tennis, fencing, lacrosse, basketball, swimming and judo. Individual instrumental tuition is offered, with 40 per cent of boys learning musical instrument. Pupils have option of boarding. School describes its accommodation as a small family unit. Christian principles, a commitment to scholarship, excellence within and beyond the classroom, and respect, service and care for others remain the essence of a child?s education at Eltham College.

Approach to discipline: The school expects its pupils to be courteous, well-mannered, honest and considerate. A citizenship programmes promotes positive participation in the school culture. A system of house points is used to reward good behaviour.

Uniform: Navy blazer, white shirt, school tie, grey jumper, grey shorts (long trousers in year six), grey socks and black shoes.

Special needs: Peripatetic teacher works with pupils with learning difficulties on one-to-one basis.

Inspection: April 2001: 'The junior school is a happy, welcoming and successful part of Eltham College. The pupils are friendly, very well motivated and keen to work, and enjoy success in their studies. The master of the junior school has established an ethos of care and mutual respect where all members of the school community are valued, and where relations between staff and pupils are very good. Attainment is high and a broad and varied programme of extra-curricular activities enhances pupils? opportunities for learning.'
