Background: The ethos at Eltham College encompasses Christian principles, a commitment to scholarship, excellence within and beyond the classroom and respect, service and care for others. The principles upon which the school was founded to educate the sons of missionaries are still evident in the school's community service and charity programmes. The school is linked with three village schools in Nepal, giving financial aid and sending gap year students to provide help. Most subjects are taught unstreamed so that pupils can discover their own strengths and develop at their own pace. Following their GCSE exams all pupils at Eltham College spend two weeks undertaking work experience and most continue into the coeducational sixth form. Academic success is paramount at this stage, although other skills such as leadership, working in a team, public speaking and showing initiative are also carefully developed. Tennis courts, a cricket pavilion, an indoor swimming pool and sports centre with a multi-use hall, fitness room and dance studio provide ample facilities for school sports. Work is about to commence on the construction of an all-weather hockey pitch, due for completion by the 2007 season. Outdoor challenges are also offered, starting with a camping weekend in Ashdown Forest for year 7 pupils, adventure training on Dartmoor in year 8 and leadership training on Dartmoor in year 11. Expeditions for pupils working towards the challenging Duke of Edinburgh's Award take place in north Wales and Scotland.
