General information
Background: Hayes School was developed from the parish school of 1791, but its separate existence as a secondary school began in Gadsden, an imposing Victorian, red brick Gothic-style mansion. On Ist January, 1992 Hayes School attained Grant Maintained Status with all funding and running costs coming directly from the department for education. Expansion from six to eight forms of entry was approved by the governing body in 1997 and additional accommodation became available in 2000. From September 2003 the school was designated as a Media Arts Specialist School. Through activities such as filmmaking, TV and radio production, web and graphic design, photography, music technology, and art, all of the subject areas are able to deliver their curriculum in new and exciting ways. The art, design and technology, ICT, media and music departments are united in delivering the creative: Media Arts Technologies (C:MAT) programme. Hayes School boasts a dynamic and creative drama department, with a team of highly committed teachers. Students are provided with excellent opportunities to participate in a wide range of drama and performing arts experiences. The school offers a great variety of sports and extra-curricular activities to all students. Included are opportunities for athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, cross-country running, dance, golf, gymnastics, hockey, keep-fit classes, orienteering, netball, rounders, rugby, skiing, ski-training, soccer, softball, squash, table tennis, lawn tennis, trampolining, volleyball and weight lifting. Many sporting events, tours and fixtures are also organised.There is also the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, an Air Training Corps Squadron, a fine Study Centre with over 15000 volumes and 150 computers, school choirs, orchestra, jazz band and rock groups. Hayes School is well known for its achievements both within and outside Bromley. In Art many students regularly work with contemporary professional artists and the department has been awarded the prestigious Artsmark Gold. Hayes received the National Sportsmark Award in 1997 and reawarded in 2000 and 2003. The school promotes traditional values. It encourages its students to prize honesty, personalresponsibility, integrity and self reliance and expects them to show care, tolerance and respect for others. The school aims to strive for excellence and to be distinguished from others. .
