General information

Background: Opened in 1970, a single building with a large field and two playgrounds; space allows for nature studies, sports areas and extra-curricular activities. Underpinning the school's success is maintenance of the Catholic ethos; links within local community encouraged through events such as singing at the old people's home as well as inviting people into the school. Pupils have range of extra-curricular activities: raising money for charity, playing sports, and singing in successful school choirs. Pupils given foundations of a lifetime of learning, within a broad curriculum; specific attention is paid to literacy and numeracy. Parents described as 'very supportive' and get involved in the life of the school, from helping in the school to organising and supporting social and fundraising activities. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place. Wide range of extra-curricular activities: French, football, drama, athletics, cricket, and hockey. 'At St James' School we have a clear and shared philosophy of education where we promote high standards of work and behaviour and give praise where it is due. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum based on equal opportunities as well as a clear set or values to guide children throughout their lives.
