General information

Headteacher: Ali Khan, appointed in June 2005.

Staff: 16 (men 4, women 12).

Background: Founded in 1924, the school occupies a large terraced house overlooking the town park, where all outdoor games are played. Behind the main building are additional classrooms and the playground. The site is situated just outside the centre of High Wycombe. French is taught from year two in addition to the full range of national curriculum subjects. There is a school bookshop. Main sports played are football, netball, badminton, swimming, and track and field athletics. Other out-of-school clubs include computers and environmental studies. A percentage of income from fundraising is sent to charities researched and chosen by the children. Close links are maintained with local schools of similar size for sporting fixtures. Work-experience programmes are undertaken for pupils from local secondary schools. A family school which seeks to create an informal, friendly but firm atmosphere in a structured framework where the human relationship between teacher and child is at the centre of the learning experience.

Approach to discipline: 'Encouragement of independent judgement, self-discipline, kindness and consideration for others. Pastoral care directed by class teacher. Close contact and cooperation with parents. Normal sanctions applied where appropriate.'

Uniform: Boys: blue blazer, grey trousers, blue tie, grey socks, duffle coat. Girls: blue/grey skirt, blue/grey blouse, print dress in summer. 'Uniform regulations are strictly enforced.'

Special needs: There are four part-time special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs) working throughout the school, both in classrooms and in a special unit.

Inspection: March 2002: 'Crown House is a happy school in which pupils develop strong personal qualities, reach high standards in the basic skills of literacy and numeracy and achieve well in both national assessments and those for local selective schools. Pupils with special educational needs do especially well in the national tests. Pupils also do well in art, French, music and physical education. The school cares well for all those in its charge and fosters positive values and behaviour. Because of weaknesses in the curriculum and in some teaching, pupils achieve less than they could in some aspects of mathematics and science and in a few other subjects. Aspects of management have not been effective in bringing about some improvements that were identified by the last inspection as being important.'
