General information

Headteacher: Steven Wade.

Staff: 40 (men 4, women 36).

Background: The school is accommodated in a formal Georgian house and extensive purpose-built buildings in a conservation area. It occupies a small site in a rural location and enjoys magnificent views. Since the last inspection, ICT provision has been significantly upgraded with an investment of more than £140,000. Broad curriculum. Pupils enjoy a wide range of sports such as football, netball, hockey, table tennis, cross-country, cricket, athletics, tennis, swimming, judo, basketball, volleyball, handball and golf. Many musical activities are also offered. The school successfully competes in the England Primary Schools Chess Finals. The school takes part in community events in the village and has close links with the local state secondary school. It also supports national and international charity events. After-school activities are available, in addition to day-trips and overnight study visits, which are considered to be essential direct experiences within the curriculum.

Approach to discipline: Self-discipline is encouraged as are tolerance and respect for others, children and adults.

Uniform: The main items of clothing are grey. Shirts/blouses/socks are red. No jewellery is allowed. Girls do not wear ties, and every effort is made to uphold a smart but practical and acceptable uniform.

Special needs: Children with special needs are supported by one full-time and two part-time specialists, one of whom specialises in dyslexia. There is also a part-time educational therapist and a specialist in gifted and talented pupils.

Inspection: March 2003: 'The school provides a very caring environment in which the pupils of all ages achieve high standards in many subjects. Its ethos is based on care and respect and leads to the very good social and moral development of the pupils. The learning opportunities provided for the pupils are very broad and significantly enhanced by the activities programme. The school is very well led and managed. The provision for the pupils' spiritual development is not as good as it should be. The classroom use of information and communication technology (ICT) is in need of improvement. There are no formal plans for subject development.'
