General information

Headteacher: A J Sims.

Staff: 23 (men 8, women 15).

Background: Gayhurst School was founded in 1908 and moved to its present 'attractive' site in 1930. It is situated on the edge of green belt land adjacent to a five acre playing field and a further four acre field is reached through 'pleasant' woodland. The 23 classrooms include specialist subject rooms, a sports hall, libraries, a computer room and science laboratories. The junior school was rebuilt in 1995 and 'extensive' rebuilding of the senior school is planned in the next 18 months. The school has 'a history of academic success' including top scholarships to leading public schools and a high pass rate to the local grammar schools. Boys participate in a 'wide range' of sports and activities and compete against other schools in over a dozen pursuits. The school has 'strong links' with the local church and community and raises money for charity each term.

Approach to discipline: 'Boys must be polite, courteous and aware of the thoughts and needs of others as often as they can.'

Uniform: Dark blue blazer, grey trousers, blue shirt, grey school jumper with dark blue/light blue stripe, black shoes. Enforced 'quite strongly'.

Inspection: November 2003: 'Gayhurst is a caring school with a friendly atmosphere. It provides a good, broad, balanced education and prepares pupils well for their senior schools. Most pupils achieve good academic standards, relative to their abilities; they behave and respond well in lessons, and their personal, moral and spiritual development is good. The school needs to consider how to raise the standard of teaching in all lessons to that of the best. The majority of parents are pleased with many aspects of the school and provide good support.'

Secondary schools: Royal Grammar, High Wycombe; Dr Challoner's; Merchant Taylor's; Berkhamsted; John Hampden Grammar.

Boys' age range: 4 to 13.
