General information

Headteacher: P H Rushforth, appointed in September 2003.

Staff: 7 (men 1, women 6).

Background: Founded in 1912, Heatherton House is a day school in a pleasant residential area of Amersham, within easy reach of the surrounding towns and villages. The buildings are attractive and well-resourced, with many new facilities. Small, popular non-selective family school in which happy, motivated children love to learn. Small class sizes; prominent feeder school into Buckinghamshire selective grammar schools. Parents are actively involved; support for variety of charities. Recent sporting successes have included the IAPS Small School Swimming Relay Championship; also mixed-stroke and freestyle champions; Chiltern District under-11 netball champions. Extra-curricular activities include drama, ballet, music, and numerous visits and orchestra activities in the UK and Europe. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school care, until 5.30pm. 'We seek to ensure that every child enjoys the excitement of learning and discovers personal strengths and a sense of self-worth. High regard is paid to the development of responsibility, self-motivation and discipline, independence, the power of expression and a sense of humour.' .

Approach to discipline: 'Consideration and respect for others are central to the ethos of the school. There is a strong anti-bullying policy and all pupils are aware of the rules concerning behaviour and appearance. If problems occur, they are dealt with by the headmistress in partnership with parents and pupils.'

Uniform: Green pinafore/skirt, green and white striped blouse, green Heatherton cardigan, green raincoat or Heatherton blazer. 'Rules regarding school uniform must be adhered to by all pupils.'

Special needs: Specialist staff address identified needs within the context of the classroom and through the use of support materials. Individuals and small groups are also withdrawn from class to receive additional support by trained staff.

Inspection: February 2005: 'Heatherton House School enables all pupils to achieve very good standards of attainment in years one to six and very good standards in the foundation stage. The quality of teaching is very good throughout the school. The provision for personal development is very good and contributes to the pupils? progress both academically and personally.'

Secondary schools: Royal Masonic School for Girls (4 pupils); Berkhamsted Collegiate School (3 pupils); Dr Challoner's High School (3 pupils); Pipers Corner School (3 pupils); Wycombe Abbey School (1 pupils).
