General information
Headteacher: Sue Cliffford, appointed in October 2004.
Staff: 30 (men 2, women 28).
Background: Founded in 1926, the school is situated on the edge of open country and comprises three 'attractive' houses with purpose built classrooms. It has four acres of grounds including a tennis and netball court, all-weather playing area, play apparatus and lawns, while athletics tracks and swimming pools are 'within easy reach'. Although it is a girls' school, boys are accepted to the age of four. The school's 'well-qualified and dedicated staff team ensure a high standard of academic work, a happy atmosphere and careful supervision of the children at all times'. Pupils regularly have a 100 per cent success rate at common entrance and many win scholarships to senior independent schools. They also achieve 'excellent' results in county selection tests. Girls learn French and Latin. Sports include gym, netball, tennis, swimming, rounders and athletics and the school teams compete successfully at local and national level. Many children receive individual instrumental tuition and all give the NSPCC consistently strong support. Kindness and friendship is the rule at this Christian foundation school.
Approach to discipline: 'The school rule is kindness and friendship. It aims to teach courtesy and consideration for others by example. There is a good standard of discipline in the school which they are careful to maintain.'
Uniform: Various shades of blue (navy through to hyacinth). Skirt, shirt, v-neck jumper and striped cotton summer dress. 'Regulations are enforced moderately rigorously.'
Special needs: The school offers specialist tuition to pupils with specific learning difficulties, particularly in the areas of dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia.
Inspection: November 2003: 'High March fulfils its aims and aspirations to provide a happy, caring environment which nurtures confident pupils who enjoy learning. Good standards of achievement and of pastoral care reflect the skills and efforts of dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff. The school has a small number of weaknesses of which the measuring of pupils? progress is the most significant.'
