General information
Background: The Royal Latin School is situated to the south of Buckingham town centre and serves a widespread area. The earliest origins of the school may date from the 13th century, and there is documentary evidence that the school existed in 1423. Parkland setting, with fine trees, rare plants, and wildlife; extensive playing fields cover 27 acres. Modern facilities; serves an area which has a favourable social and economic background compared with national averages. A quarter of the pupils travel from outside its designated area, from Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and the new city of Milton Keynes. In 1999, the latest phase of redevelopment was completed, providing new library in old Brookfield boarding house, which included computers and a private study area, new laboratories and teaching rooms, and additional arts and technology facilities. The curriculum is broad and balanced and is accessible to all pupils. Extra-curricular provision is good, with numerous residential opportunities, dramatic and musical activities; high level of commitment to the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Extra-curricular sport is a strength, with high levels of involvement in a wide range of sports. The school also extends the curriculum by offering instrumental provision to a high proportion of pupils. Community links; support to 18 partner schools; charity work. Buckinghamshire professional development school; Leadership in the Community Swan Award. Specialist science college status from 2003; also specialist mathematics and computing college status. After-school care, until 5pm. Artsmark Silver (2004); Sportsmark (2003); Investor in People status (2000, 2005).
