Motto: "Sanctas Clavis Fores Aperit." ("The key opens holy doors").

Background: Pupils at Bury Grammar School for Girls are encouraged to become independent thinkers and discover a love of learning. The school offers an environment in which young people's opinions are heard and achievements acknowledged. Since its founding in 1884 the school has swiftly moved with the times and offers well-resourced departments as well as a curriculum which exceeds national requirements. Girls study two modern languages as well as Latin. At GCSE they choose 10 GCSE subjects from the 21 on offer and four AS-subjects in the sixth form, continuing with three in their final year. Sixth-formers also follow a life skills programme and take responsibility for leadership roles within the school community. Cross-curricular projects offer pupils the opportunity to develop creative problem-solving skills and to work in teams. Pupils also take part in a variety of regional and national competitions such as the UK Mathematical Challenge. Trips to museums, theatres and historical sites are a regular feature and visiting lecturers also offer the opportunity to think beyond the confines of the school. Foreign exchanges are an annual highlight and there have been recent school expeditions to Nepal and Peru. Students are encouraged to develop their creative talents. Art workshops are run at lunchtimes and the girls stage drama productions with the boys' school. Every girl takes part in musical activities. The festival choir toured Poland last year and, more recently, performed in Budapest. Sports teams succeed at local, regional and national level.

Alumni: Victoria Wood, comedian and writer.

Streaming/setting: All girls are of above average academic ability so little streaming is necessary. There is some streaming in Maths and French at year 9.

Approach to discipline: All pupils are issued with a copy of the school rules and a code of conduct which they have helped to develop and are expected to follow. Infringements are rare and are usually dealt with through discussion. Academic detention may be used for failure to complete homework. Suspension is used only for serious breaches of school discipline and is very rare. A student found in possession of drugs may be excluded.
