General information

Headteacher: B Bottoms, appointed in September 2004.

Staff: 10 (women 10).

Background: The junior school building was opened in 1997 by author Hazel Townson. On a campus with boys' and girls' seniors, boys' juniors and mixed kindergarten, close to town centre. It was purposely built to house eight classrooms, a library, ICT suite, music room and medical room. Each class is fully equipped with a television and video, a 'wet area' to enable easy access to a sink and each year group has its own cooker with oven. The junior school is able to make use of a number of senior school facilities. Girls have weekly PE lessons in the sports hall and gymnasium and use the playing fields in summer. They also receive a weekly lesson in the swimming pool. Lunch is eaten in the dining hall which, like the swimming pool, is on the boys' school site.Curriculum covers all national curriculum subjects; French is also taught in year five and six; music and sport are strong. Four musical concerts every year; many children play instruments and learn recorder. Competitive sports, including chess, dance, gymnastics, art, technology, choir, orchestra, recorder groups, netball, mixed games, and cross-country. Strong tradition of fundraising, for local and national charities; thousands of pounds raised annually. Building success on a foundation of self-discipline, high levels of motivation, and friendly competition.

Approach to discipline: Based upon mutual respect; infringements of the school code are very rare; girls' opinions are heard through school council; assembly reinforces ethos. Problems are aired in 'circle time' within classes and are resolved before they become serious.

Uniform: Mid-blue and navy. Uniform is strictly adhered to. The uniform is designed to be smart and serviceable.

Special needs: Extra support and provision provided for children diagnosed with mild dyslexia and for those who have slight difficulties with hearing, sight and motor skills.
