General information

Headteacher: Susan Temperley.

Staff: 15 (men 5, women 10).

Background: Founded in 1951 as a boys boarding preparatory school, boarding continued at Heathfield until 1991. The school was originally located in Wheelwright House, previously the home of the Wheelwright famliy who were responsible for founding Rishworth School in 1724. Rishworth School is sited just a few hundred metres from Heathfield's campus. Extensions and refurbishments over the years have led to the addition of a separate nursery block, dining/assembly hall, swimming pool and specialist classroom areas. The school has a Church of England foundation and is set in a 'beautiful', wooded valley. The 'broad' curriculum allows Heathfield to cater for a 'wide' range of academic abilities and is based on the National Curriculum. Specialist staff teach music, physical education (PE), art and design technology. Children have the opportunity to take part in football, cricket, athletics, cross country, swimming, netball and rounders. Pupils raise #2,000-#3,000 annually for charity. Children may arrive at school from 7.45am and after-school care is available until 5.45pm. Specialist support is provided for children with dyslexia and there is a special educational needs (SEN) co-ordinator who works at both Rishworth School and Heathfield.

Approach to discipline: 'A positive approach is followed. School rules are discussed with children. A set of classroom rules - applicable to the whole school - are written by each class in their terminology. A discipline policy supports the approach and states the line of command, sanctions and responsibilities of staff, parents and pupils.'

Uniform: Boys: Navy coat, school blazer, long charcoal grey trousers, grey pullover, grey/white long sleeved shirt, maroon school tie, dark grey socks, sensible black shoes. In summer, boys may wear a short sleeved grey shirt, short mid-grey trousers and black sandals.Girls: Navy coat, school blazer, grey regulation pleated skirt, long sleeved white shirt, maroon pullover/cardigan, maroon school tie, black/grey socks/tights, sensible black shoes. In summer, girls may wear a short sleeved white shirt of a striped summer dress, long/short white socks, red sandals/black shoes. 'It is an expectation that uniform regulations are followed.'

Inspection: September 2005: 'Rishworth and Heathfield provide a good education for the pupils in their care. The governors, headteachers and management provide clear leadership; they create an ethos in which values such as integrity, industry and respect for others are well developed. The curriculum is enriched by a good range of extra-curricular activities to which pupils, and especially boarders, respond enthusiastically. Pupils attain well and are well prepared for the next stage in their education. Habits of independent learning need further encouragement.'
