General information

Background: There is a 'strong sense of community' in this school which serves the village of Northowram on the outskirts of Halifax. Most of the housing in the catchment area is privately owned, and pupils attend the school from the local community and beyond. Northowram is housed in a building which opened in 1978, with a large extension of six classrooms and a nursery which opened in 1996, bringing the total number of classrooms to 12. There is also a library, a nursery, a multi-purpose hall, hard-surfaced play areas and 'extensive' grassed areas for sports, games and general play. Mathematics is a 'particular strength' of the school but it is also proud of 'curriculum developments across all subjects and the quality of our school environment'. Extra-curricular activities include gymnastics, netball, football, rugby, choir, guitar, recorder, orchestra, chess, computer and French clubs. The school's sports clubs compete in local leagues and its rugby team has represented Calderdale and won a CD player for the school. It has 'numerous links' with the community, including the local hospital and senior citizen groups. Northowram's Parent-Teacher Association arranges social and fund-raising events for school resources, in addition to charity fund-raising. Teachers build 'strong links' with the school's feeder secondary schools and work 'closely' with local colleges providing places for work experience. Northowram also works 'closely' with the police and fire service with regard to pupil safety. The school has achieved Investor in People status, and is currently over-subscribed, this year receiving 84 applications for 50 places.
