General information

Background: Rishworth School has a long and proud history. It was founded and endowed by John Wheelwright in 1724, and established in a modest but charming old building which is now the Chapel.The school is housed in a splendid Georgian building to which additions have been made as the School has grown. A second large building was erected in 1931 but the major expansion has taken place since 1957. In 1957 a new classroom block was built and the 1960s brought a whole series of developments including the Chan Music School, Bentley Swimming Pool, a Home Economics Unit and new boarding accommodation. The pace was maintained in the 1970s with the provision of new classrooms, squash courts, a games hall and, crucially, the Wade Science Block which provided new facilities for all the major sciences. Growth continued in the 1980s. More study-bedrooms for girls and boys were provided and in 1983 a major building programme was undertaken following a school development appeal. A magnificent new building was opened. It contains ten new classrooms and a multi-purpose Assembly Hall which can seat the whole school and has facilities for drama and indoor games such as badminton and basketball. Further developments include the building of a new Sports Hall and a state-of-the-art Performing Arts Centre. The very latest developments are a major upgrade of ICT equipment and whole-school network, the complete refurbishment of all existing boarding areas and the creation of two new boarding annexes, and the stripping and total refitting of the Science Department Laboratories and Prep Rooms with the best of modern fixtures and equipment (completion Summer 2003). Just as the main school has expanded so has the Preparatory Department, Heathfield. It occupies a handsome stone-built house standing in its own grounds close to the Swimming Pool and its own Sports Hall. A new Infant Block has been built as well as a Dining Hall and Assembly Hall with extensive alterations made to the original buildings in order to provide a Science Laboratory, an Art Room, an Electronic Keyboard Room, a Design and Technology area and a newly refurbished Computer Room. .

Inspection: September 2005: Rishworth provides a good education for the pupils in its care. The governors, head teacher and management provide clear leadership; they create an ethos in which values such as integrity, industry and respect for others are well developed. The curriculum is enriched by a good range of extracurricular activities to which pupils, especially boarders, respond enthusiastically. Pupils attain well and are well prepared for the next stage in their education. Habits of independent learning need further encouragement.
