General information

Background: Sowerby Bridge High School is a community school in the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale. The school is situated in its own extensive playing fields on the Burnley Road some three miles from Halifax. Originally a grammar school built in 1910, the school has had a number of extensions in the 1960's and 1970's to provide appropriate facilities for each of the curricular areas. In January 2000 a state-of-the-art ICT centre was opened and, in January 2001, 16 new classrooms, an administration centre and a new canteen were completed. At present, an extensive building programme is underway which, by September 2005, will have replaced all pre 2000 buildings. The school offers a broad and balanced curriculum for students of all abilities in line with the national curriculum. At Post 16 there is a good range of A Level and GNVQ courses available to a growing sixth form. The staff work hard to maintain a wide range of extra-curricular activities and all students have the opportunity to involve themselves in a variety of residential experiences during their time at the school. The school aims to create a happy environment in which the academic and social needs of all children can be met, whatever the children?s ability.
