General information

Background: Benwick Primary School was opened in 1873; the school has played a central part in the life of the village for more than a century. It occupies its original Victorian building, which was recently extended and refurbished. There are three classrooms with newer extensions for administration and a separate dining hall. The school offers grassed and hard play areas, a good-sized sports field, gardens and an adventure playground. The adjoining schoolhouse has been converted for school use, including a television/music room and a library. A modern village hall with stage facilities adjoins the grounds and is used for PE and presentations. Involvement with other schools includes such sporting activities as football, netball, rugby, cricket, swimming and athletics. Teams from the school won netball, basketball and hockey tournaments and were runners-up in rugby, cricket and 5-a-side football tournaments in 2001. Extra-curricular clubs include football, safe cycling, netball, French and cricket. Visits are encouraged to offer children experiences outside the classroom, and older children are also able to attend residential field trips in the Forest of Dean. The school aims to provide a stimulating, caring and safe environment in which each child is a valued part of the school.
