Inspection: May 2001: 'Devonshire House Preparatory School is situated close to the centre of London and is a privately owned school for pupils from the age of two and a half in the nursery to 13 in year 8. Although the school is co-educational, at the time of the inspection the pupils in years 7 and 8 were all boys. Devonshire House has high numbers of pupils at the younger end with up to four classes in a year group but reduces to one form in each of Years 7 and 8. The school provides a broad academic curriculum supported by a wide range of extra-curricular activities including art, drama, games and music. Some pupils compete successfully for places in the junior departments of major public schools in London at the age of seven. Others, mainly the girls compete successfully at the age of eleven for places in these public schools resulting in the relatively small numbers in years 7 and 8. The success rate of pupils in year 8 in common entrance is also good. The school has many strong features and also some areas in which further development is needed.?.
