Background: Hampstead College was founded in 1978 by Candida Cave and Nicholas Cochrane who wanted to create a college where the arts and humanities were specialist subjects. The widest choice is now offered in these disciplines at both sixth and fifth form level, as well as pre-foundation and portfolio courses in art and design. Each of the three departments, A level, art and GCSE, has its own specially designed building. Within the art block there are three full equipped studios for fine art, photography, print making and graphics. Each subject room has its own extensive library. For example, the history of art department has library comprising over 10000 slides and 2000 books. It has studio and theatre use for media and theatre students, together with video, film and editing facilities. Sports activities include volleyball, table tennis, climbing, badminton, basketball and ice-skating, held at a local, fully equipped gym. Student numbers are kept to around 120. .
Approach to discipline: The college code of behaviour sets out the procedure regarding discipline, and pupils must accepts its condition when taking up a place at Hampstead College.
Inspection: January 2005: 'Hampstead College of Fine Arts and Humanities is a good college. It caters well for the particular needs of its students. The creation of a successful learning environment, in which students develop and flourish, owes much to the vision, conviction and leadership provided by the joint principals. The college meets most of the statutory requirements, but needs to address one or two procedural matters.'
Boys' age range: 14 to 19.
Girls' age range: 14 to 19.
