General information

Headteacher: Leonie Sampson, appointed in September 1985.

Staff: 16 (men 8, women 8).

Background: Hereward House School founded in 1950. It is a small private North London preparatory school, occupying a large converted town house with a small play area that was once the garden. The school makes good use of local facilities for games, swimming and junior outdoor activities.Art, music, drama, handicraft, computing, games and swimming are an integral part of the curriculum. French is introduced in year one and Latin in year five. The more able linguists may also learn Greek. The school has a strong and continually expanding music and drama department. All boys are given the opportunity to learn at least one instrument and thus progress through ensemble work to the school orchestra. The school aims to create a warm, friendly atmosphere in which a boy can feel confident, that whatever talent or ability he might possess will be encouraged. He can feel secure in the knowledge that he is part of an establishment where honour, courtesy, kindness and good humour prevail.

Approach to discipline: Firm, fair and friendly.

Uniform: Grey socks, pullover, shirt, trousers, navy blazer, black shoes and tie.

Special needs: The school has fully qualified teacher for dyslexia.

Inspection: March 2004: 'Hereward House School is a small preparatory school for boys aged 4 to 13. It offers a good quality of education in a very happy and caring environment. A well-qualified and experienced staff is strongly and successfully committed to the welfare and all-round development of the pupils, and to their successful preparation for entrance to their chosen senior schools. Although the small size of the town house and grounds which form the school puts some constraints on the facilities that can be offered, and on the daily activities of the pupils, the school very successfully achieves its aims of encouraging and supporting each boy throughout his time at the school, and of developing the talents he has.'
