General information

Headteacher: M O Spilberg, appointed in September 1984.

Staff: 13 (men 6, women 7).

Background: Founded in 1952, Lyndhurst House is situated in a 'pleasant and quiet' side street between Belsize Park and Hampstead Village. The school is owned by the partnership of Sir John Loveridge, Lady Loveridge and MW Loveridge Esq, which also owns and operates Devonshire House School in Hampstead and Hawkesdown House in Kensington. Lyndhurst House is accommodated in a large, five-storey Victorian red brick building with 'large and airy' classrooms. It offers a dining room, science laboratory and computer room/library, with two modern extensions housing the gymnasium/assembly hall, music room and art room. There is also a 'decent-sized' playground. The curriculum includes Latin and Greek. The school is proud of its 'strong' sporting tradition, which includes soccer, cricket, athletics, cross country, basketball, hockey and tennis. Games are played at rented fields a 15-minute coach-ride away. The school also has a choir and an orchestral ensemble. Fundraising for charities is encouraged. All admissions are made according to academic ability and the school is over-subscribed, receiving approximately two applications for each place. 'The school is characterised by its small size, friendliness, busy programme and sporting and academic achievement.' Small, friendly, personal and lively.

Approach to discipline: 'A standard approach. We are not a regimented or disciplinarian school, but there have to be rules governing movement, demeanour and work, which are reinforced by reprimand where necessary. There is a system of merits and demerits. The general approach is of a relatively formal system, informally applied. Strong anti-bullying stance.'

Uniform: Royal-blue blazer with mulberry trim, grey trousers, grey shirt, mulberry tie, black shoes. 'Uniform regulations are enforced. It is not found necessary to be strict.'

Special needs: Two part-time teachers are available to help individuals or small groups who require extra numeracy or literacy work. There is no specialised dyslexia or special needs unit..

Inspection: October 2004: 'Pupils make good progress and achieve good academic standards. They develop tolerance, sensitivity and self-discipline in a happy, caring and friendly ethos, which affords high standards of pastoral care. The school community is well led by a respected and charismatic headmaster who ensures that every member of the school community feels valued and appreciated. However, the school?s formal management structures and monitoring strategies are weak and aspects of assessment, curriculum, library and welfare provision need attention.'
