General information

Headteacher: Jane Treftz, appointed in June 1995.

Staff: 32 (men 5, women 27).

Background: Southbank International Kensington was founded in 1979 by a group of British and American educators 'to provide a challenging academic environment for a culturally-diverse community'. The Hampstead branch, founded in 1995, occupies a modern, purpose-built property with a library, science and technology laboratory with dark room, and art and music rooms. There are networked computers in every classroom. It is the only UK school to offer an International Baccalaureate (IB) programme to pupils of all ages and was only the fourth school in the world to offer the IB Primary Years Programme, which includes core subjects as well as German, computing, art, music and Suzuki violin or cello. French and design technology are then added in the IB Middle Years Programme for students aged 11 to 13. English is the language of instruction but students are also encouraged to study their native languages. English as a Second Language is offered at most levels. Football, basketball, tennis, cricket and swimming are among the sports offered and the school uses London, its people, museums and theatres, 'as an extension of the campus'. Pupils in the middle school participate in a compulsory off-campus, residential programme. In keeping with the philosphy of the IB, students actively engage in community service and the school maintains a partnership with the Jack Taylor School, a local state school for severely disabled pupils. The school selects pupils on the basis of ability, motivation, discipline, behaviour and learning styles. It has pupils from approximately 35 countries and 'is noted for its friendly atmosphere'. On leaving, students are eligible to transfer to Southbank Kensington to prepare for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The school is over-subscribed, receiving four applications for each place.

Approach to discipline: 'Discussion with teacher and/or principal. Generally we do not have a discipline problem.'

Uniform: No school uniform.

Special needs: English as a Second Language is provided for non-English speakers.

Inspection: June 2004: ?The Hampstead Campus of the Southbank International School offers pupil between the age of 3 and 14 a broad, well-founded education based on the International Baccalaureate. The school is very well managed and a hardworking, experienced staff is fully committed to an educational philosophy, which strongly supports the development of the whole child. Pupils become enthusiastic learners and excellent communicators. They are very well prepared for the next stage of their education, wherever that may be.?.
